Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services should be at hand which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter.
