Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an increased risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
