Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased probability of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailored for everybody so that their unique challenges can be addressed in treatment.
