Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased probability of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services should be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
