Sadly, it is a fact that tens of millions of people choose to drive a vehicle while intoxicated by alcohol or drugs. Doing so not just puts one's life in danger and puts passengers among others at risk too, but being caught driving drunk (DUI) or driving while intoxicated (DWI) will almost always bring about severe penalties including driver's license suspension or cancellation, monetary penalties and in many cases time in jail. Quite often someone who has been found guilty of DUI or DWI ultimately struggles with an underlying substance abuse issue. A legal court system knows this, and it is therefore inclined to provide DUI and DWI Offenders alcohol and drug treatment rather than other extreme penalties for crime. Agreeing or obliging to participate in alcohol and drug treatment as a DUI/DWI Offender might not completely eradicate other penalties from the crime, but sometimes decrease the seriousness of such consequences to some large degree. Specifically if the person willingly participates drug and alcohol treatment and is also a first time offender. Studies have shown that a large percentage of individuals who do receive alcohol and drug treatment because of a DUI/DWI offense stay out of the courts for comparable charges in the future.
