Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their unique challenges can be treated in rehabilitation.
