Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater risk of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as are rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their own problems can be remedied in rehab.
