Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened risk of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be at hand which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions so that rehab clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure their own challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
