Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face.
