Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased probability of drug use issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
