Hearing impaired persons tend to have an increased likelihood of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services have to be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions so that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their unique problems can be remedied in rehab.
