Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each person to ensure that their own problems can be addressed in rehab.
