Hearing impaired persons generally have a heightened risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support in order that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their own challenges can be remedied in treatment.
