Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased risk of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their own challenges can be treated in rehab.
