Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as well as rehabilitation services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support so that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for each person so that their unique challenges can be treated in treatment.
