Hearing impaired persons tend to have an elevated probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their own personal problems can be treated in treatment.
