Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased risk of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas attached to drug use. However, drug treatment counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions in order that treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their unique problems can be addressed in treatment.
