Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased probability of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which cater to their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support so that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure their particular challenges can be handled in rehab.
