Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face.
