Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased risk of drug abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be available which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for each individual so that their particular challenges can be handled in treatment.
