Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to abusing drugs. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL treatment services are of course a necessity, as are rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services could be more tailored for each person to ensure that their unique problems can be treated in rehab.
