Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated risk of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support so that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services might be more tailored for everybody so that their own challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
