Hearing impaired persons tend to have a heightened likelihood of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with abusing drugs. However, drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for everybody to ensure that their own personal problems can be handled in treatment.
