Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater likelihood of drug use issues because of their impairment, and rehab services must be at hand which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of the impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each person to ensure that their own challenges can be remedied in treatment.
