Hearing impaired persons generally have an increased likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available to them which serves their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support so that rehab clients can know that they are not on their own, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their particular challenges can be handled in rehab.
