Hearing impaired individuals tend to have an elevated likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services have to be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for each individual to ensure that their own challenges can be treated in treatment.
