Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be at hand which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a venue for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for each person so that their own personal challenges can be handled in treatment.
