Being diagnosed with HIV/AIDS may set off drug abuse, or dangerous sexual behavior due to drug abuse may have caused the person to contract the illness. Individuals who have HIV/AIDS, either due to their drug use or as a pre-existing problem prior to their drug use problem, often require rehabilitation services tailored in order to meet their particular demands and challenges. Some of these challenges are physical in nature, because of the fact that substance abusers with HIV/AIDS rarely look after themselves and take the proper medicines they need to maintain their own health. Consequently, they arrive to treatment in very poor physical shape and this will have to be addressed as a priority while also dealing with other critical issues. Aside from the obvious necessity to offer medical services during rehabilitation, people with HIV/AIDS must also deal with deeper problems which brought about their alcohol or drug use. Usually, individuals have circumstances in their lives which are purely environmental which may have caused them to turn to alcohol or drugs, such as oppressive circumstances in their lives or negative relationships. These are the issues which rehabilitation counselors will give attention to as part of HIV/AIDS rehabilitation services.
