Hearing impaired individuals generally have a greater likelihood of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their issue as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions so that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their own personal problems can be handled in treatment.
