Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an elevated likelihood of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which serves their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can appear isolated, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. However, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services can be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their own problems can be addressed in treatment.
