Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater probability of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. However, drug treatment counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their unique problems can be treated in rehabilitation.
