Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a greater chance of substance abuse issues due to their impairment, and treatment services have to be available which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless because of the impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem due to social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face.
