Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater chance of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be available which serves their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals comprehend the challenges that these clients face.
