Hearing impaired men and women generally have a greater chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services must be available which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Nonetheless, drug treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter.
