Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services should be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that come with possessing this handicap in life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug use. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a necessity, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services can be more tailor-made for each person to ensure their own personal challenges can be treated in rehab.
