Hearing impaired men and women generally have an elevated likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals due to their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological problems that accompany having this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face.
