Hearing impaired persons generally have a greater likelihood of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services have to be at hand which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then elect to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue because of social stigmas attached to substance abuse. However, drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals comprehend the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support to ensure treatment clients can know that they are not alone, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services could be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure their own personal problems can be treated in treatment.
