Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehabilitation services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and be without goals because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that come with having this handicap in everyday life. Firstly, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Nonetheless, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a venue for important peer support to ensure that treatment clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services might be more tailor-made for each individual to ensure that their unique problems can be addressed in rehabilitation.
