Hearing impaired men and women generally have an increased chance of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and be without goals for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, because these individuals may make an attempt to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehabilitation counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face.
