Hearing impaired men and women tend to have an increased risk of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services should be available to them which serves their circumstances. People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that accompany having this handicap in daily life. To start with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their issue due to social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who offer rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support so that treatment clients can know they are not alone, and that there's hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services might be more tailored for each person to ensure their own personal problems can be handled in treatment.
