Offering gender-specific treatment services has shown to be beneficial in circumstances where traditional rehabilitation settings have fallen short, for example coping with situations within a women's life which are distinctive and traumatic. Such concerns may pertain to sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological abuse, eating disorders, one's family and being a mother, and other serious issues which can be specific to women. Research shows that women can also get involved in drug use more readily than men, and so are more vulnerable to illness as a result of drug abuse issues than males as a result. Because of obligations in their home, women also tend to put off seeking out and undergoing treatment, a situation which can lead to catastrophe. That said, treatment services for women are created so that a women's needs will be the concentration and priority. Similar to coed rehabs, drug treatment programs which provide rehabilitation services to women help women through detoxification and withdrawal as a first step. Following this step, counselors help women focus on both basic and gender-specific issues who have brought on their drug abuse. Women also benefit from the beneficial support from other female peers, and some centers that provide rehabilitation services to women offer client beds for her kids.
