People who are hearing impaired can appear alone, unmotivated, and goalless for their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the psychological and emotional problems that accompany having this handicap in everyday life. To begin with, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, because these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug use. Nonetheless, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who provide rehab to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer support to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person to ensure that their unique challenges can be handled in rehab.
