Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a greater probability of drug abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be available which serves their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, since these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer support in order that rehab clients can know that they're not alone, and that there's hope to handle their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual therapy services may be more tailored for each individual to ensure their unique challenges can be addressed in rehabilitation.
