Hearing impaired individuals tend to have a heightened probability of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and treatment services must be at hand which cater to their circumstances. Individuals who are hearing impaired can seem to be isolated, lack motivation, and goalless for their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in daily life. In the first place, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is often a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas attached to drug use. However, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL treatment services are definitely a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy offers a forum for important peer interactions to ensure rehabilitation clients can know that they are not alone, and that there's hope to handle their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services could be more tailored for everybody to ensure their unique challenges can be treated in rehab.
