Hearing impaired individuals generally have an elevated likelihood of substance abuse issues because of their impairment, and rehab services should be available which cater to their needs. Individuals who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that accompany possessing this handicap in everyday life. In the first place, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to substance abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol rehab counselors who provide rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are treatment services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services may be more tailored for each person so that their own personal challenges can be addressed in treatment.
