Hearing impaired individuals generally have a heightened likelihood of drug use issues because of the impairment, and rehab services should be available which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel alone, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then choose to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, as these individuals may make an attempt to hide their problem because of social stigmas that come with drug use. Having said that, drug rehabilitation counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehab services are definitely a must, as are rehab services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy provides a venue for important peer interactions to ensure rehab clients can know they are not alone, and that there is hope to resolve their challenge with alcohol and drugs. Individual counseling services could be more tailor-made for each individual so that their own personal problems can be remedied in rehab.
