Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened probability of drug use issues due to their impairment, and rehab services must be available to them which serves their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, lack motivation, and goalless due to their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary release from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. To begin with, detecting a substance abuse problem among the hearing impaired is usually a challenge, as these individuals may try and hide their problem as a result of social stigmas that come with drug abuse. Having said that, drug and alcohol treatment counselors who offer rehabilitation to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are definitely a must, as well as rehabilitation services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer interactions to ensure treatment clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to resolve their problem with drugs and alcohol. Individual counseling services can be more tailored for everybody to ensure that their particular challenges can be treated in rehab.
