Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened risk of substance abuse issues because of the impairment, and rehabilitation services must be available which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, unmotivated, and be without goals because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with drugs or alcohol to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in life. To begin with, detecting an alcohol and drug abuse problem among the hearing impaired is generally a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their issue because of social stigmas that come with substance abuse. Having said that, drug rehab counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a necessity, as are treatment services which address the particular challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter. Group therapy gives a forum for important peer support to ensure that rehabilitation clients can know they are not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their problem with alcohol and drugs.
