Hearing impaired men and women tend to have a heightened chance of drug abuse issues because of the impairment, and treatment services have to be available to them which cater to their needs. People who are hearing impaired can seem to be alone, unmotivated, and goalless because of their impairment. Many hearing impaired individuals then decide to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and have a temporary release from the psychological and emotional challenges that come with having this handicap in daily life. Firstly, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, since these individuals may try to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug abuse. Having said that, alcohol and drug treatment counselors who provide treatment to hearing impaired individuals see the challenges these clients face. ASL rehabilitation services are of course a must, as are rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals face. Group therapy provides a forum for important peer interactions in order that rehab clients can know that they're not on their own, and that there is hope to handle their challenge with drugs and alcohol. Individual therapy services may be more tailor-made for everybody so that their own challenges can be remedied in rehabilitation.
