Hearing impaired individuals generally have an increased likelihood of drug use issues due to their impairment, and treatment services should be available to them which cater to their needs. Those who are hearing impaired can feel isolated, lack motivation, and goalless because of their impairment. Some hearing impaired individuals then opt to self medicate with alcohol or drugs to numb this pain and experience a temporary escape from the emotional and psychological challenges that come with possessing this handicap in life. In the first place, detecting a drug and alcohol abuse problem among the hearing impaired can be a challenge, because these individuals may attempt to hide their problem due to social stigmas attached to drug use. Having said that, alcohol and drug rehabilitation counselors who offer treatment to hearing impaired individuals understand the challenges that these clients face. ASL rehab services are of course a must, as well as rehab services which address the unique challenges that hearing impaired individuals encounter.
